Barcelona will face no consequences, according to LaLiga president Javier Tebas, for payments made to the company of a former senior referee, Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

He did, however, accept that the Catalans could still face criminal charges.

LaLiga takes decision on punishing Barcelona for paying referee €1.4m

In Spain, statutes of limitations only allow clubs to be punished within three years of any offense.

According to Cadena Ser, Barcelona paid about €1.4 million to Negreira’s DASNIL 95 SL between 2016 and 2018, with further payments possibly dating back to 2003.

In a statement, Barca insisted on receiving “technical reports linked to professional refereeing” from Negreira’s organization.

Even in that instance, the payments could still be considered a conflict of interest due to Negreira’s position on the referee’s committee at the time.

“Let’s see how that investigation ends. At LaLiga, we are going to wait and respect the prosecutor’s office investigation and once that has finished, see whether it decides to file the appropriate complaint or lawsuit in the corresponding courts. From there, we will make decisions,” Tebas said.
