Rev. Fr. James Anelu, the Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ewu-Owa Gberigbe in Ikorodu, Lagos has been reportedly suspended after he banned the singing of Igbo songs in the parish.
It was learnt that Anelu has been known to chastise choristers who sing Igbo songs whenever he is officiating.
According to him, Igbos are not the only ones who attend Catholic churches and the excesses of the Igbos must be contained.
It was reported that he angrily stopped choristers who were singing an Igbo chorus during the second collection, noting that Igbos cannot keep dominating other people in Catholic churches in non eastern states allegedly claiming that God recognises only geographical languages of the parish.
Church members revolted after he announced the ban of Igbo songs in the church causing chaos in the church.
It was reported that the priest threatened them with the wrath of God.
According to source, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Martins, in a “disclaimer”, directed the priest to proceed on “an indefinite leave of absence” which started today, February 8.
